What for?

I was in class today and we were talking about what we could do for a project due next week. We have to have a simple sketch done for a small block of wood for some art vending machine (don't ask, cause I don't get it either). I casually said that I suppose I could use one of my sketches that I have at home and this girl looked at me like I was crazy.
She said, "what are the sketches for?"
And I replied, "Just freetime drawings."
She seemed confused and to tell you the truth, it kind of confused me that a junior art student could not comprehend 'free-time drawings.' Do these people not draw in their freetime?! What is the point in getting a BFA? Even if she is doing graphics or layout, you can't be successful by living off of what you learned from class alone! Those are just teaching tools. Creativity comes from what you do in your free time!

On another note, I did some sketching this morning. I need to do some more right now, but I have to work on typography. So much to do. Will I ever have time to do what I love?

No figure drawing tonight :-( I'm still waiting to be contacted from that person who is trying to start the club. She must be busy with finals. I need to do some more sketching tonight after I finish more of my homework. I just hope I have to strength. Last night I passed out at like 11:30. Almost done with school for the semester!

Falling

Been working on school stuff all day. Finished one of my illustrations for class. This is Falling. It's probably one of my best digital peices yet. The zoomed out doesn't look as good though :-(

First Day

Today was a decently productive day. It's been a few days since I started this thing, but I said I would keep it going, and I shall. Today I did a few sketches. Some in my drawing notebook and some on my clipboard. I have an idea in my head that I am playing with. Trying to get the characters down. I think it has some solid ideas if I can organize them right. I need to make sure I don't copy too many things that I am thinking of. Time to mix some stuff around! I love drawing!

Andrew Jones

I did my interview with Andrew Jones yesterday and I must say that I am am very impressed and a little awestruck. I feel like I still have a long way to go, and I feel like I may be on the wrong path to what it is that I really want to do. I worked so hard to get into graphics and now I feel like it is going to start holding me back. This is my last semester with an illustration class and I am very sad about it. I feel like I am ahead of many of my classmates...or that they don't want to have anything to do with illustration. I feel like I need to concentrate more on my drawing and less on graphics...less on this work that I don't feel I need to do to get the job I want. So what do I do about this...? if I didn't have Ms. Spivey it wouldn't be a big deal to me, but her classes take up so much of my freetime outside of class that I am lossing time to do what I need to do. I have discovered ConceptArt.org and have been reading what is needed for a portfolio...reading the things that I do not have or am not capable of yet. Things that I need to do:

1.) DRAW!
2.) Talk to other concept artists.
3.) DRAW!
4.) Learn more about color and doing landscapes and architecture.
5.) DRAW!
6.) Learn some 3D software like 3D Studio Max
7.) DRAW!!!!

Because I need to do alot of catching up with other people in this field, I dedicate this site to my artwork and sketching, as well as critiques, interviews, and research.

Goals:
1.) To do a drawing a day (at least one drawing, painting not included).
2.) To have a photoshopped image (cell shaded or painted) every two weeks.
3.) Find an internship that has to do with concept art before this coming summer.
4.) Do some type of exercise at least 3 times a week to keep myself loose.

These goals must be done regardless of sleep, grades, or socialization. This determines my future and I must stick to it. I have some other goals in mind, but these are the golden 4.
